The University of Michigan has collected data using a mobile phone application to understand how long people sleep daily and the challenges they face when sleeping early or late. This research encompasses statistics from over a hundred countries, considering factors such as age, gender, and working hours in natural light. According to experts, analyzing the results of this study will help in understanding and managing sleep better. The study reveals that social pressures play a significant role in reducing sleep or affecting biological triggers. The timing of when people go to bed is the most influential factor in their sleep.


Key Findings on Sleep Duration

The report indicates that middle-aged people get the least amount of sleep, falling short of the medically recommended seven to eight hours. For this study, scientists gathered information from nearly six thousand individuals aged fifteen and older. These participants voluntarily provided details about their countries, time zones, and sleeping habits. The report highlights that Dutch people sleep one hour more than people in Japan and Singapore. Additionally, it was found that women sleep half an hour more daily than men, especially those aged between thirty and sixty.


Health Risks of Sleep Deprivation

According to the study’s findings, sleep deprivation or reduction can pose serious risks to human life. In the United States, one in three adults sleeps less than the recommended seven hours. The institution warns that chronic sleep deprivation can lead to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
