According to a report published in the journal Science Advances, these microbots are engineered to transport chemotherapy drugs straight to lung cancer cells. Professor Liangfang Zhang from the University of California, a key researcher in this study, explained that this technology can integrate into lung tissues to combat various malignant diseases effectively. By navigating through the lungs, these microbots ensure precise delivery of therapeutic agents to the affected areas.


Composition and Functionality of Microbots

The researchers revealed that the microbots are composed of nanoparticles attached to the surface of algae cells. The algae enable the nanoparticles to swim through the lungs, locate tumors, and administer chemotherapy drugs directly. This targeted approach ensures the drugs reach the cancer cells without affecting the surrounding healthy tissues.


Immune Evasion Strategy

Liangfang Zhang further elaborated that these microbots act as 'disguises.' They make the nanoparticles appear like red blood cells to the body, preventing any immune response activation. This stealth mechanism is crucial in ensuring that the microbots can operate within the body without being attacked by the immune system.
